Trainer profile: Heather Carrell
My first experience with dog training began many years ago when, as a young child, I began trying to train our two Wire(d) Fox Terriers, with a modest degree of success.

Back then your dog was considered to be very well trained if it would sit on command.
25 years ago, I adopted a German Shepherd cross from the SPCA, and joined the local obedience club. I have been involved in dog obedience ever since.
I served the club in many capacities, as a committee member, instructor, Vice President, and President. About 3 years ago, I realized that I was spending more time on club administration and instructing than actually working with my dogs.
At that point I changed clubs. I am currently instructing at the new club, as well as finding the time to train my own dogs for competitive obedience, and to indulge my passion for dogs and dog training generally.
I completed 3 years of study at Victoria University of Wellington majoring in Philosophy and Psychology with a strong emphasis on, and interest in behaviourism and learning theory.
My teaching / training experience is extensive and varied.
I have been instructing obedience classes in club situations for many years.
On leaving school, I completed teacher training and then taught for a couple of years. I have also been a Driving Instructor, trained retail staff, and taught retail practice and product knowledge to supplier’s representatives.
My last 5 dogs have all been SPCA rescues / rehomes, each of which came with issues of varying degrees of severity. Together we have worked through and resolved those issues.
